President Medina at SICA-Spain

In the parallel summit of the Central American Integration System and Spain (SICA-Spain) that also took place in Panama last week, President Danilo Medina spoke of the fight against drugs and drug trafficking, and called for Ibero-American governments to unite to reduce its effects. He said the Central America and the Caribbean have suffered an increase in violence and insecurity after being used as corridors to transport drugs to the US and Europe.

President Medina also called for education to be included in efforts to strengthen regional security. He said education is an effective way to combat insecurity and violence. He urged President Mariano Rajoy of Spain to respond to the Dominican government’s request for support for teacher training.

Medina thanked President Laura Chinchilla of Costa Rica for her support for the DR’s membership in SICA and congratulated Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli for his country’s economic growth and expressed his wish that it would spread to the rest of the region.
