The National Social Security Council (CNSS) has announced the completion of a study that calculates the enormous cost of lack of driving safety in the country. The World Health Organization ranked the DR in second place worldwide when it comes to traffic accidents in 2013. The report says the social cost of deaths due to traffic accidents is estimated to have an impact of 2.21% of the GDP. The study was carried out by the Social Security Research, Study and Development Corporation of Chile.
The study looked into major problems such as the increasing number of vehicles on the roads, lack of a central government entity for prevention, the enormous number of motorcycles in circulation and their heavy involvement in accidents, and lack of respect for driving rules by drivers and pedestrians.
“Analysis of the Cost of Traffic Accidents, their Trends and Present Situation of the Coverage for Medical Care for Traffic Accidents and Proposal for the Creation of a National Fund for Medical Care for Traffic Accidents” (FONAMAT) and its implementation according to Law 87-01 proposes creating a road safety and accident prevention culture in the country.
