CDEEE says they are paying debt

The Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) paid out RD$69.78 billion (US$1.5 billion) to the private generating companies for energy, power, connection rights, interest and debt during the first nine months of 2013.

The CDEEE highlights that payments are made for the current and past debt. As of 30 September the outstanding debt stood at US$568.26 million.

CDEEE executive vice president Ruben Jimenez Bichara emphasized the efforts the Medina administration is making to ensure it fulfills its commitments to the energy sector, including the addition of coal-fired generating plants.

He made the statements after the Dominican Electricity Industry Association (ADIE) complained that power arrears were at US$776,830,262. An ADIE release issued yesterday, Monday 21 October said that receiving payments was the only way to guarantee that power supplies would continue and to ensure electricity sustainability in the short term. The debt corresponds to arrears for four months.
