Yesterday, Monday 21 October, the Head of the National Police intervened in the municipality of Higuey and ordered the arrest of 24 police officers, including two lieutenants and five sergeants, for complicity with drug dealers.
Police spokesman, Colonel Jacobo Mateo Moquete said that those arrested had been taken to the capital for investigation by the Department of Internal Affairs.
The chief of the National Police, Major General Manuel Castro Castillo, recently announced a new clean up program of the police that has resulted in around 200 police officers being dismissed, retired or arrested in the last three months, most found guilty of committing crimes or being in dereliction of their duties.
Mateo Moquete said the arrest and investigation of the 24 in Higuey is part of this zero tolerance program against police corruption and involvement with any criminal activity.
