Discussions on the Labor Code

President Danilo Medina met with representatives of the main trade unions yesterday, Tuesday 22 October in order to discuss the proposed reform to the Labor Code and public sector salaries.

Union leader Pepe Abreu rejected the requests made by the business sector to change parts of the Labor Code in regards to working hours, severance pay and rights for pregnant women. The business leaders argue that the present code is rigid, there is duplication in the severance pay charge. He also said that it was surprising that the original people behind the law, Rafael Alburquerque and Milton Ray Guevara, had neither been consulted nor invited to take part in the modification process.

Business leaders say more flexibility would encourage employers to create more jobs in the formal sector. Locally, the public sector and informal private sector have been where most jobs have been created in recent years.
