Former district attorney and AP presidential candidate, Guillermo Moreno announced yesterday, Wednesday 23 October, that he was going on a 48-hour fast in a church in the Cristo Rey Parish in Santo Domingo in rejection of the Supreme Court of Justice judgment that confirmed that his administrative corruption case against former President Leonel Fernandez was being filed away.
He said the fast, during which he has also pledged to remain silent, was aimed at opening a space for in-depth reflection on the lessons learned from the high court decision and about what should be done in these circumstances of these times.
Moreno has accused Fernandez of taking advantage of his position as President for personal gain, including receiving donations from state contractors to his Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode).
His wife, former Central Electoral Board (JCE) judge, Aura Celeste Fernandez said: “It is time that the country ended this darkness that corruption and impunity have imposed and for a system of true and trustworthy justice to prevail.”
The fast, which began yesterday, Wednesday 23 October, will last until Friday, 25 October at 10am.
