Justice at a snail’s pace

The second chamber of the Penal Section of the Court of Appeals has postponed the hearing of an appeal against the sentence handed down in the Paya drug-related murders for the sixteenth time. This case deals with the massacre of more than half a dozen men in Paya, Bani. One of defendants, Jorge Luis Chalas got a new lawyer who has asked for some time to go over all of the case files. The appeal has been filed by the large group of men involved in the case, including the only survivor of the massacre, Nicaraguan Orin Clinton Gomez. The court handed down sentences of between 30 and 10 years over two years ago, and defense lawyers are saying that the statute of limitations has expired.
