Twenty senators from the PLD and the PRSC parties have signed a document asking President Danilo Medina to include US$100 million in the 2014 Budget to build the Monte Grande dam in Barahona province.
They say that if this doesn’t happen, the work will have to stop, which will end up costing more in the long run, adding that the dam will have massive benefits for the Enriquillo region in the provinces of Barahona, Bahoruco, Independencia and Pedernales.
They recalled that Congress has already approved a loan from the Brazilian export bank, National Bank for Economic and Social Development and the Andrade Gutierrez construction company for around US$249.5 million to build the dam in Monte Grande and repair the dam in Sabana Yegua.
They claim that US$100 million should be assigned to this project but that only US$12.8 million was allocated in the 2014 budget sent to Congress for review.
Following the budget meeting at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Monday 28 October, Senate Budget committee chairman Dionis Sanchez said they expected President Danilo Medina to announce a solution soon.
