Former President Leonel Fernandez attended the awards ceremony for the first UNESCO-Juan Bosch Prize for the Promotion of Social Science Research in Latin America and the Caribbean during his recent visit to Paris. The event took place on Tuesday, 29 October at the UNESCO headquarters.
The Prize was instituted by UNESCO’s Executive Board, at the initiative of the government of the Dominican Republic during the term of the former President himself. Its creation commemorated the centenary of Professor Bosch’s birth in 2009. In creating the prize, the member states on the Executive Board recognized the remarkable contribution of Professor Juan Bosch to the study of social and political processes in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean region.
The US$10,000 prize is funded by the government of the Dominican Republic.
The winner of the prize was Colombian sociologist Karen Nathalia Ceron Steevens who received her award from the general director of the UNESCO Irina Bokova. Also attending the award ceremony was Dominican Ambassador to the UNESCO, Laura Faxas.
The prize was awarded as part of the 8th UNESCO Youth Forum 2013 that is taking place in Paris with representatives from 150 countries.
