The Ministry of Public Health launched the National Strategic Nutrition Plan yesterday, Tuesday 29 October. It seeks to reduce malnutrition and obesity levels throughout the population. The launch was headed by Health Minister Freddy Hidalgo and the Ministry’s nutrition director, Susana Santos, who highlighted the importance of educating the public on proper nutrition.
Santos highlighted that 28% of children under the age of five have anemia as well as 32% of pregnant women and 34% of women of childbearing age.
She said that the plan seeks to reduce these levels and tackle the serious problem of obesity in adults and children.
The advice is that people should eat between five and six times a day but smaller portions and that they should include a variety of food. The problem is not that the food that Dominicans eat is bad but that it needs more balance. She said the ideal was two portions of rice one of beans plus fruit and salad. Fruit and vegetables should be eaten at least twice a day.
