President Danilo Medina has sent a proposal for journalist Virgilio Alcantara to be appointed Dominican ambassador to Canada to the Senate for confirmation. If confirmed, he will be based in Ottawa. The veteran journalist was the founder of the newspapers Ultima Hora where he worked from 1970-1980 and Hoy where he worked from 1980-88, as reported in Hoy. A graduate in journalism from the UASD, he served as press director for former President Leonel Fernandez for two years (1996-98). He has also served as ambassador and consul general in South Korea (1998-99), ambassador in Japan (1993-94), ambassador to the UN (1990-93) and concurrent with Canada (1993). He has also been general consul in New Orleans (1989-90) and in New York (1989-90) and permanent representative to the OAS.
