Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier Garcia said that the weekend inauguration of the 750-suite Breathless Punta Cana Resort and Spa in Uvero Alto, Punta Cana was just the first of three major openings scheduled for the tourism sector in November and December. He said on 20 November the government would officially inaugurate the Touristic Boulevard of Punta Cana, followed by the San Pedro de Macoris-La Romana highway stretch on 27 November. He said the La Romana bypass would be inaugurated on 11 December. The Minister said that they were the most important roads for the eastern part of the country. The new road links are significantly reducing driving time between the eastern destinations and the capital city. It is expected the highways will put Santo Domingo less than an hour and a half from La Romana. Some stretches of the highways were opened for the Constitution Day long weekend.
President Medina himself was in Punta Cana on Saturday, 2 November for the inauguration of the 750-suite Breathless Resort. He was accompanied by Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta, and the Minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo, in addition to the Minister of Tourism.
Spain’s Minister of Tourism, Jose Maria Soria, also attended the gala opening of the hotel, which built mainly with Spanish investment. A Grupo Martinon investment, it will be managed and operated by NH Hotels and AMResorts.
