Polish priest formally accused, sought by Interpol

The Dominican authorities have submitted accusations against Polish priest Wojciech Waldemar Gil whose last known whereabouts is in Poland. Interpol has listed the priest, who worked in the Juncalito parish in Santiago province for several years, on its wanted persons list. Dominican prosecutors have sent Polish prosecutors a formal accusation of sexual abuse of seven children, says Santiago prosecutor Luisa Liranzo. She said that although dozens of children were affected, only seven families agreed to proceed legally against the former Juncalito parish priest. She said that many of the others were embarrassed and afraid, or had yielded to pressure and threats.

“It is a very serious case and this man should be arrested and sentenced and drastically penalized,” said Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito. He said that the DR authorities have to wait and see if the investigation by the Polish authorities results in corresponding charges. There is no extradition agreement between Poland and the Dominican Republic so the local judiciary is interested in cooperating with the Polish judiciary to assist them in trying Gil.

The file against Gil contains hundreds of photographs, videos and links to Internet pages that incriminate Gil in the sexual abuse of minors in Juncalito, says the Santiago prosecutor.

Gil was interviewed by Dominican investigative journalist Alicia Ortega for her SIN TV News Channel in Poland where he is staying with his mother. In the interview, he attributed the accusations to retaliation for his work against drug traffickers.

As reported, the evidence shows that the priest raped the children together with other non-identified adults, who videoed them masturbating and dressed in female clothing.

El Nacional reports that the priest has links to the former Papal Nuncio in the Dominican Republic, 65-year old Josef Wesolowski. Wesolowski, also from Poland and a close friend of Gil, is also accused of pedophilia and was removed from his post on 21 August. He traveled to the Vatican to respond to accusations prior to the scandal hitting the headlines in the Dominican Republic.
