The Haitian authorities have decided to close their side of the border, as the Dominicans did, in response to ongoing action by drivers since Saturday, 2 November. The protests erupted because several vehicles are being held on the Haitian side of the border. Dominican drivers were protesting the obstacles to their work in Haiti by Haitians.
Today, Wednesday 6 November a meeting between Haitian and Dominican authorities is being held in Dajabon and it is hoped that the ambassadors of both countries will attend to try and obtain a solution to the impasse as well as discuss other matters of interest between the Dominican Republic and Haiti like the migration issue.
Meanwhile the truck drivers are continuing their protest and blocking the roads leading to the bi-national market. They have warned that they will not stop until they have the results from the meeting.
The Haitian authorities say that the impounded vehicles are at the Police station in Juana Mendez (Ouanaminthe), and another has been impounded as the driver entered Haiti irregularly and refused to pay the vehicle transit fee in dollars.
They also revealed that another truck is in Cap-Haitien and that a heavy goods vehicle was set on fire in Fort Liberte.
