Several environmental groups working on coral restoration and conservation internationally are proposing that the coral restoration programs around the Dominican coastline should be promoted as a tourist attraction.
During her visit the Dominican Republic, the president and CEO of Counterpart International, Joan Parker, said that coral reef management was essential for the health of coastal species, not only in the Dominican Republic but in the Caribbean and the world.
The initiative is being supported by the Punta Cana Ecological Foundation, the University of Miami and Counterpart International, which have been conducting research and implementing coral reef restoration and conservation projects for nine years with notable success.
During a workshop on coral reef restoration and conservation being held at the Holiday Inn in Santo Domingo this week, the environmental director of Grupo Punta Cana, Jake Kheel, highlighted the importance of the project and described their underwater work.
