Diario Libre submits habeas corpus writ against Insurance Superintendent

Free newspaper Diario Libre has presented a habeas corpus writ to the judiciary against the Superintendence of Insurance in its role as liquidator of the Segna Insurance Company following the reticence of the superintendent, Euclides Gutierrez Felix to comply with law 200-04 on freedom of information access. The writ was presented on Friday, 1 November by the newspaper’s executive editor Adriano Miguel Tejada, on behalf of Diario Libre to the Higher Administrative Court, as reported in Diario Libre.

Diario Libre has requested a balance statement of the liquidation, with its bank statements, term deposits, bank accounts and other financial instruments that are mentioned in Segna’s financial statements. Diario Libre says they have information that Segna has more than RD$1.2 billion worth of deposits in local banks.

The newspaper reports that on Friday 1 November, the Superintendence of Insurance notified Omnimedia and Diario Libre editor that it reserves the right to take pertinent actions to vigorously contest any legal action and those responsible for the actions.
