The Dominican and Haitian authorities reached an agreement after a meeting in Dajabon yesterday, Wednesday 6 November that will permit the re-opening of the border between the two countries and allow the passage of merchandise and the celebration of the bi-national market in the city. The border, according to El Nuevo Diario, was closed by authorities on both sides after protests by truck drivers and owners carrying construction materials, food and merchandise into Haiti. The protests centered round the detention of several people and confiscation of their vehicles in Haiti and called for the return of the trucks. The Haitian authorities promised to work on returning the vehicles and trailers as well as paying compensation for a tractor-trailer that was burned in Fort Liberte. They also pledged to intensify the search for a Dominican driver who disappeared between Jimani and Port-au-Prince. Diplomats from both countries, transportation union bosses and local authorities took part in the meeting.
