Cayo Levantado can’t be inherited or sold

The Constitutional Court has ruled that Cayo Levantado, an island in the Bay of Samana, is in the public domain and cannot be registered as private property. By means of ruling 194-13, the Constitutional Court annuls an order for the division of property rights on the island between around 3,000 people who claim inheritance rights, as reported in Diario Libre.

The court established that Law 64-00 on the Environment establishes that the island is a recreational area in the public domain that cannot be privatized because it belongs to all Dominicans.
