As of today, Tuesday 12 November, the standard-size bread rolls (pan de agua) will cost RD$7 each, an increase of RD$2 per unit that has been authorized by the Union of Small and Medium Sized Flour Industries (UMPIH).
Francisco Capellan, speaking on behalf of UMPIH, said that the 40% increase was due to the cost of production of bread that has gone up by more than 46% over the last five years.
He said that his organization had asked President Medina to subsidize bakers so that they could avoid the increase but that if they had not applied it then they were under threat of disappearing from the marketplace.
