Adriano Espaillat gets briefing on regularization plan

New York State Senator Adriano Espaillat and assemblyman Phil Ramos met with President Danilo Medina yesterday at the Presidential Palace to get first hand explanations on the Constitutional Court Ruling 168-13 that calls for the implementation of the National Immigration Regularization Plan, as reported in Diario Libre. After the meeting, in a press conference they announced their support to help explain the reach of the plan to their constituents. Pro-Haitian and human rights advocates have opposed the Constitutional Court Ruling 168-13. The government is auditing the documents of 24,932 children of foreigners who were irregularly registered, including 13,672 descendants of Haitians.as reported in Diario Libre. The Court Ruling confirmed previous judiciary court decisions regarding who qualifies for Dominican nationality and sets dates for the regularization of the status of others. This is set forth in the Immigration Law that was passed in 2004 but had yet to be applied by the Dominican government.

As reported in Diario Libre, the legislators said they could help convene the 40 Dominicans in elective positions in the United States to explain the scope of the plan. In a press conference after the meeting with the President, Espaillat agreed that there has been a disinformation campaign. He said the President said that key government officers would be available to travel to the US to give explanations in person. Also present at the meeting was Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo, Minister of Interior and Police Jose Ramon Fadul who presides the National Immigration Council, and legal consultant to the President Cesar Pina Toribio.
