President Danilo Medina was at his alma mater, the Santo Domingo Institute of Technology (INTEC) yesterday, Wednesday 13 November, to announce the start of the construction of the university’s new engineering school. President Medina is an economics graduate of the university.
This is a first of several infrastructure constructions in which the government will participate at the city university as part of the university’s 10-year Master Plan. Rector Rolando Guzman did not quantify the government investment, but told the press it would be “hundreds of millions of pesos.” He said that the university would return any funds provided by the government in the form of scholarships.
The construction of the new engineering school is funded by a RD$150 million donation from both the Fundacion Huascar Rodriguez and the Cementos Cibao company, founded by the late businessman. Rector Guzman said that the first phase is only 30% of the overall project.
