Haiti consults Dominican Republic on water supply system

The Dominican Republic is helping the Haitian authorities to improve their potable water supply service. Officials from the Haiti Water Department (DINEPA) requested the assistance from the Santo Domingo Water Department (CAASD). Director Alejandro Montas told the press that CAASD is sharing its experience with Haiti. Michael Merisier, assistant director of the potable water department in Port-au-Prince said that they needed to improve water service as it only produces half of the city’s needs. They also asked CAASD for advice on billing issues and on how to create public awareness about not wasting water. “Since we have had no experience in management of water meters we came to the Dominican Republic to learn, he said. Merisier is also the coordinator of potable water programs in rural areas of Haiti.

CAASD director Alejandro Montas says that the country is working on a new lab to test the quality of the water served that would be the largest in the Caribbean. He said that they are also starting a program to replace 200,000 plastic lids to encase water meters because the metal lids are repeatedly stolen for sale to scrap metal dealers.
