Some 1,000 convicts from Haiti could be living illegally in the Dominican Republic. A report in Diario Libre says that Police Chief Major General Manuel Castro Castillo recently met with his Haitian counterpart in Jimani and both agreed to step up efforts to arrest these dangerous criminals. Diario Libre says that the number of Haitian criminals living in the DR could be greater, because the Haitian police say that around 3,500 criminals escaped from Haitian jails, many after the 2010 earthquake. Very few have been arrested.
According to Dominican police statistics, of every four or five crimes, at least one was committed by a Haitian national, or a Haitian was involved. Escaped convicts who refuge in the DR have been arrested for murder, robberies, drug trafficking, kidnapping and other crimes. Diario Libre’s source says that it has now become routine for the Police to makes an arrest and find that fugitives from Haitian justice before and after the earthquake are involved.
