Nearly 2,000 transplants in 12 years

According to data issued by the National Transplant Coordination Institute (Incort) a total of 1,928 organ and tissue transplants have been performed in the country between 2000 and 2012, including 664 kidney transplants, 22 liver transplants, 1,232 cornea transplants, two heart transplants and eight bone marrow transplants.

Incort coordinator Dr. Fernando Morales Billini revealed that the rate of organ donors in the country is 1.83 per million inhabitants which has been growing steadily but more work needs to be done to encourage organ donation, including setting up a laboratory which allows all the necessary tests for the transplant process to be carried out.

The information was disclosed during the launch of a publication called “Recommendations, Information and Documents Volume III of the Ibero-American Council for Donation and Transplant” headed by Public Health Minister Freddy Hidalgo. Deputy Public Health Minister Nelson Rodriguez Monegro was also present.

At the same time the National Strategic Plan for Donation and Transplant for 2014-2018 was presented.
