The Attorney General Office has announced that it has five proven pedophilia complaints against former papal nuncio Jozef Wesolowski, the Pope’s ambassador in the Dominican Republic. One is the case of a boy, now aged 18, who says he had been abused since he was 14. Another involves Francisco Javier Occis Reyes, in preventive custody accused of sexual abuse of a minor. He says he was a sexual partner of the papal nuncio, who also asked him find him boys between the ages of 14 and 16 for his pleasure.
As reported in Diario Libre, the Attorney General has provided the Vatican with evidence for the five cases, including audio recordings of the victims’ statements. Wesolowski was abruptly recalled from his post in the Dominican Republic on 21 August 2013, after investigative reporters started covering his case. He had been appointed to the post in 2008. As a diplomat in the Dominican Republic, Wesolowski enjoyed diplomatic immunity, but his case is now being investigated by the Vatican.
The Attorney General Office has also sent Polish prosecutors evidence in the case against fellow Polish priest Wojciech Waldemar Gil, also accused of sexual abusing seven minors. Gil is on Interpol’s wanted list.
The Wesolowski case is just one on a long list of child sexual abuse cases by priests around the world now being addressed by the new Pope.
