Sugar shortage

The Minister of Agriculture Luis Ramon Rodriguez says that he is looking for a solution to the sugar shortage problem, so he is coordinating the volume of the sugar imports with the National Sugar Institute (Inazucar), producers and businesses.

He said that one of the problems with local production is that the country was affected by drought in 2012/2013 that led to a reduction of 250,000 tons in sugarcane production that will obviously affect businesses.

However they are trying to ensure that sugarcane harvests in 2013/2014 and beyond will be sufficient to satisfy normal demand at the end of the year.

The Minister said that he had spoken with the director of Inazucar who had told him he had met with producers and businesses involved with sugar to establish how much needed to be imported.
