Dominican authorities are reviewing the scope of the operations that the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been carrying out in the country, and next week they will establish their position on its status. The review of their position is being done through the Legal Adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Relations, as a result of meetings that have been held with the Immigration Council and all the measures adopted as a result of the Constitutional Court sentence on nationality. “UNHCR is an agency of the United Nations System and the Dominican Republic is a part of the system, and it recognizes the agency, nevertheless what is now under revision is the scope of the operations that it has been carrying out in the Dominican Republic,” the Deputy Minister of Foreign Relations, Cesar Dargam Espaillat told Diario Libre. Without going into details and upon being questioned about the operations of this international agency, he limited himself to saying “there will be an official position regarding exactly what the status of UNCHR is and this will be known soon.”
