Money talks in preferential vote bill

According to Diario Libre’s editorial today, Friday 22 November, the bill for preferential vote passed in Congress this week favors politicians who have more money to spend on campaigning. Adriano Miguel Tejada writes that the bill will also benefit the senators who will automatically be credited the vote of the winning deputies from the same party.

Tejada says that then the vote will no longer be democratic. “It is the prostitution of the voter, who will sell to whoever pays the most,” he writes.

“What opposition party can defeat the candidates of the government, which has all the money in the world to buy votes? On what radio or TV station are they going to place ads, if the government can buy all the slots? And, also, which candidate from outside can defeat the incumbent who has spent years courting, with taxpayer money, his constituents?” writes Tejada.

He wonders what purpose the Law for Electoral Funding serves. “We are faced with an attack on the general will using the taxes we all pay,” he observes. In conclusion, he calls on the President to veto the bill.
