Three cyclists, Eugenia Rosario, Claudio Caamano Velez and Andres Zaglul are setting out on a nationwide tour later this week, when they are expected to clock up 1,748 km in 19 days. “On Wheels Around My Country” (Rodando por mi pais) will start on Friday, 29 November at 6am from Parque Independencia, the zero kilometer mark in the country. They will head to San Jose de Ocoa in the southwest, continuing on to Pedernales. Then they will take the difficult Carretera Internacional to make their way to Monte Cristi by 8 December. From there the route takes them to Puerto Plata, Santiago, Nagua and Samana. They will then tour the east through Cabo Engano in Punta Cana. They should be done by 17 December, returning to the Parque Independencia via a last stretch of 123 km from La Romana to Santo Domingo.
The cyclists say they have embarked on this initiative because of their concern for the progressive deterioration of natural resources in the Dominican Republic. They say it costs 1,000 times more to recover than to protect natural resources. On their tour they will share photos and videos through social media and the press following the route.
