US citizens jailed for sex trafficking accusations

The Public Prosecution office in Puerto Plata is asking for one year on remand in jail for an American couple and three months for a Dominican accused of being part of a sex trafficking network.

US citizens D. G. Bushnell, 63 and S. S. Bushnell, 43 were arrested together with Dominican E. M. Gonzalez during a raid on their home where several laptop computers with webcams were found used by Dominican women and gay men to offer sexual services via video conferencing which clients paid for online using credit cards.

During the raid four women and one man were rescued by the Specialist Prosecution Service against Illegal Traffic in People in coordination with the Department against Organized Crime and the National Police Department of Traffic in People.

The Prosecutors maintained that those arrested recruited the victims from poor communities in the country, presumably via their company, Luxcana Inversiones, S.R.L., with which the victims had to sign a contract whereby they received 15% of their earnings and the rest went to their employers. If they refused to work there were fines ranging from RD$100 to RD$800.
