According to the Deputy Chief of the National Police, General Alejandro Dipre Sierra, the number of suicides so far this year has now reached 500, a level that he described as alarming.
He said that they needed to work to reduce the number of cases and improve public education.
He added that often people say that the deaths in the country are due to crime but the majority result from traffic accidents, illustrating his point by saying that that 14 motorcyclists died in traffic accidents over the weekend.
He promised to increase street patrols during the Christmas period so that the population could rest easy.
