Cracking down on yolas

The Head of the Dominican Armada (Navy), Vice Admiral Edwin Dominici Rosario has announced that so far this year they have arrested 95 Cubans involved in people trafficking and confiscated 195 illegal boats (yolas).

He also said that they have arrested more than 2,000 people for organizing illegal journeys, most of them Haitian, and assured that they had dealt a major blow to the organizations that organize such trips.

Dominici went on to say that the number of Dominicans taking illegal journeys had reduced over last year and that security measures have been stepped up by 90% and 60 organizers have been ordered to stand trial.

He said the most commonly used departure points for the crossing were Nagua, Miches and Cabeza de Toro.
