Border security to be enhanced

Minister of Defense Sigfrido Pared Perez has confirmed an increase in border surveillance in anticipation there could be conflicts. “There will be some attempts to create tense situations between Dominicans and Haitians, as well as in the markets and among citizens who live in the border area and for that reason Cesfront (the Specialized Border Security Force) is having meetings with several institutions to ensure peace, so that situations that are happening abroad do not have a local effect, that all stays as it has been,” he said.

He commented that the National Foreigner Legalization Plan gives foreigners 18 months to legalize their status and they will not be subject to deportation during that period. He said that Haitian and Dominican authorities are working in coordination to maintain security on the border.

It was known that last night, Thursday 28 November, President Danilo Medina met with security force chiefs to review national security issues and constitutional freedoms. The Minister of Defense Sigfrido Pared Perez, director of Migration Jose Ricardo Taveras, chief of Cesfront, General Guerrero Clase, chief of the Armada (Navy) Edwin Dominici Rosario, Minister of Interior and Police Jose Ramon Fadul, Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito, Chief of the Army Ruben Paulino Sem and chief of the Police Manuel Castro Castillo attended the meeting.

After the meeting, Dominguez Brito said that security issues were discussed. He said the government fixed the position the state would adopt adhering to the respect for the Constitution, individual liberties and human rights, as reported in El Caribe.
