Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will be setting up operations in the Dominican Republic for a weeklong visit starting today, Monday 2 December through Friday, 6 December to hear complaints by Haitians who are claiming Dominican nationality and to observe the start of the National Foreigner Legalization Plan. Six IACHR commissioners will be visiting along with 15 support staff. Their agenda includes a meeting with President Danilo Medina as well as sessions with the Central Electoral Board (JCE), the Ministry of Foreign Relations, Department of Immigration, and the ministries of Interior & Police, Education and Public Health. They will also meet with the Attorney General and the Ministry of the Presidency. They are setting up a table to receive complaints at the Club de Profesores of the UASD in Santo Domingo from 9am to 7pm until Thursday 5 December. On Wednesday 4 December they will travel to Dajabon, Mao, San Pedro de Macoris, La Romana and Pedernales. They will hold meetings with the members of the Specialized Border Security Corps (Cesfront). On Friday 6 December, the IACHR will give a press conference to reveal their initial findings.
The IACHR is visiting after the Haitian Foreign Ministry protested that people of Haitian descent were not being nationalized as Dominicans.
