Six delegates from the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights (IAHRC) were at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) Professors’ Club yesterday, Monday 2 December, to hear complaints and witness statements from people affected by the nationality ruling issued by the Constitutional Court.
Commission communications director Maria Isabel Pineda said that the press could not enter the room as people making statements might be intimidated by their presence and would not be able to express themselves freely.
She went on to say that the Commission was in the country to analyze the current situation and check that the Dominican Republic was observing four basic human rights: the right to nationality, the right to identity, the right to equality and the right to non-discrimination.
She added that they would also be meeting with civil society organizations and expected there to be between 80 and 100 people.
Commission head of security Roberto Antuan Jose said that in the morning a group of students from the UASD had arrived hurling insults at the Commission and that around 15 police agents were on constant guard outside to keep order.
