Child undernutrition down

According to a regional publication by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, chronic undernutrition among children decreased by 50% in the Dominican Republic from 1990 to 2013s.

The publication, “Panorama of Food and Nutritional Security in Latin America and the Caribbean 2013” was launched yesterday, Tuesday 3 December in the Chilean capital, Santiago.

The report says that 3.4% of children suffered chronic malnutrition between 2005 and 2012, whereas in the period 1990-1996 it was 8.4%.

The FAO representative in the DR, Gero Vaagt said that the reductions showed that public policies are working in the country and that the FAO was helping via several projects such as the installation of Food Banks in the most vulnerable areas.

The report includes the Dominican Republic in the group of countries (also including Brazil, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Peru) in the Americas that have met the first Millennium Development Goal (MDG 1) by halving their proportion of people suffering hunger, two years before the 2015 deadline.
