Haitian ministers challenge deportation rumors

Speaking at a press conference with Haitian Foreign Relations Minister Pierre Richard Casimir yesterday, Tuesday 3 December, Haitian Interior Minister David Bazil said that the media has been publishing erroneous reports of deportations and lynchings of Haitians by Dominicans after the murder of an elderly Dominican couple in which the suspects are Haitian. The Haitian government ministers said that there was a single death of a suspect in the murder and other Haitians chose to voluntarily return to Haiti fearing reprisals. Bazil said that the situation at the border is normal. The Minister of the Interior reiterated his appeal to the Haitian people to remain calm, inviting them to preserve good relations between Haitians and Dominicans living in Haiti, practicing tourism, trade or working on the reconstruction of Haitian infrastructure. “We are not at war!” he said.
