Human Right Commission meets with deputies

The delegation from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) met yesterday morning, Tuesday 3 December with representatives from all parties in the Chamber of Deputies and its president Abel Martinez.

The meeting took place at the Presidential Palace and according to Martinez they spoke about the respect due to the laws and the Dominican Constitution.

The Deputies also gave their opinion on the need to seek alternative options for respecting the human rights of vulnerable people.

The IACHR delegation was made up of Commission president Jose de Jesus Orozco Enriquez, Tracy Robinson, second vice president Rosa Maria Ortiz, commissioners Felipe Gonzalez, Dinah Shelton and Rose Marie Antoine, executive secretary Emilio Alvarez Icaza Longoria, deputy executive secretary Elizabeth Abi-Mershed, and special envoy for the Freedom of Expression, Catalina Botero.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) had fixed its position regarding Constitutional Court ruling 168-13. The ruling formalizes the practice of not issuing Dominican nationality to everyone born in the Dominican Republic. It offers a path to legalization and possible naturalization of undocumented foreigners.

Roberto Rosario, president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) said that the delegation from the IACHR is prejudiced against the country. He said that they only allotted 15 minutes to meet with the JCE that is in charge of the civil registry in the Dominican Republic. As reported in El Dia, he said that it would have been correct to allot equal time to the parties in conflict. The IACHR is dedicating itself to receive persons who dispute the application of the ruling. Diario Libre reports these were provided with transport to meet with the IACHR officers by NGOs that assist immigrants.
