The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources has sent two fishermen and the owner of a fish shop in Las Terrenas to justice for illegally catching an endangered turtle and selling its meat.
A ministry press release states that members of the Samana Environmental Department caught the two fishermen, Francisco Paulino Bonilla and Jose Fermin, in the act of cutting up a turtle by during an operation on Playa Bonita.
They added that they confiscated 30 pounds of turtle meat from the Elida fish shop in Villa Clara and that the owner, Ana Barett would also be brought to justice.
They reiterated that sea turtles have been designated an endangered species.
