UNHCR urges fast action on Constitutional Court ruling

Despite the fact that UN representative in the DR, Lorenzo Jimenez de Luis has said that the decision of the Constitutional Court 168-13 is a closed issue, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued a press statement yesterday, Thursday 5 December urging the government “to rapidly take steps to restore the nationality of individuals affected by a ruling of the Constitutional Court, which deprives tens of thousands of Dominicans of Haitian descent of their nationality, rendering them stateless.”

The government has established that around 24,000 people who had acquired Dominican nationality irregularly would need to apply for naturalization. In the meantime, those that qualify will be fast-tracked for residency.
