New in Santo Domingo: Eugenio Maria de Hostos Park

In a ceremony held on Sunday, 15 December, National District Mayor Roberto Salcedo opened the Eugenio Maria de Hostos Park on the Malecon seafront boulevard in Santo Domingo. The 24,400 square meter park was renovated at a cost of RD$70 million. Salcedo said the opening is part of government plans to make the city more attractive to tourists. Salcedo apologized for the five-year delay in completing the works. The old park, originally built in 1937, was known as the Ramfis Park, after one of dictator Trujillo’s sons. It now has a 500-meter open-air gym and a 2,000 square meter children’s play area.

Next door, the President Juan Bautista Vicini Burgos Boulevard was opened on the east side of the park.
