Diario Libre’s editorial today, Monday 16 December, advises the DR to ignore the voices that want to sit Haiti and the Dominican Republic down at a table again. Last month the DR reached such an agreement with Venezuela as arbiter, but Haiti discarded the agreement. This led the Dominican government to break off talks. Diario Libre now says that the DR should just apply the nationality rule and the legalization plan. “Talks with the Haitian government do not guarantee the fulfillment, not only by that government as experience has shown, but also because that government does not control the NGOs that maintain a intensive campaign against the country. If the matters are going to stay the same, with the overt or covert blessing of the Haitian government, why the talks?” The editorialist recommends that the DR settle matters according to Dominican law and then talk. The Dominican government is giving until February 2015 for residents in the Dominican Republic to regularize their status or be deported after that period.
