Spanish businessman Juan Jose (Pepe) Hidalgo was ordered to be arrested by an La Altagracia province court judge for failing to attend a court hearing last week. Hidalgo is the chief executive of Air Europa and BeLive Hotels. Hidalgo is known to be in Spain.
Judge Andres Rijo Delgado issued the order so that Hidalgo can respond to accusations made against him, but it now appears he has left the country.
His problems with the law started months ago when he was accused of violating law 5859 concerning real estate in Punta Cana and causing damage to US investors. At that time he said he would not attend any more in court hearings.
This time, he has a writ against him for defamation brought by lawyers Andres Porfirio Cordero Hache and Omar Chapman, who represent the Cuban-American company Sandalio Suarez Real, for violating the same real estate law in the Dominican Republic.
