Under the auspices of President Nicolas Maduro and the Venezuelan government, Dominican President Danilo Medina and his Haitian counterpart, President Michel Martelly agreed to resume talks on issues of mutual interest for their respective countries. Both leaders were in Caracas, Venezuela from 16-17 December for the II Extraordinary Summit for Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our Americas (ALBA) and Petrocaribe.
The Presidency reported that the two leaders met in Caracas nd had a “cordial and frank” dialogue.
Both the Dominican Republic and Haiti consider it important to resume talks on matters including migration, trade, the environment and security, and they both decided to invite the Venezuelan government, the United Nations, the European Union and CARICOM to accompany them during this process, said the Dominican Presidency.
The leaders also agreed to set up a high-level commission with five members from each country to establish an agenda and timeframe for all of the relevant issues.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that the meeting was historic and said he was pleased that it had taken place and wished them success during the future talks.
During the II Extraordinary Summit for Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our Americas (ALBA) and Petrocaribe, the Venezuelan President announced the creation of the Eco-ALBA group to move toward greater cooperation with PetroCaribe and the Common Market of the South (Mercosur).
