Some 15 police units have been drafted in to patrol the highways from the Juan Pablo Duarte Bridge to the Las Americas airport and Boca Chica to stop robberies and assaults being carried out on arriving passengers during the Christmas period.
Colonel Omar Garcia, head of police at the airport has said that the increased patrols will also cover Route 66 that is the airport access and perimeter road.
He said they would be using 14 new vehicles, with communication radios and personnel who were trained for this type of work and that they would be constantly on the move within the airport area, on the Las Americas highway and around Boca Chica.
In addition there will be officers in civilian clothes working intelligence to try and detect the thieves before they strike.
He said that there would be more controls in the arrivals area, especially targeting pickpockets or people stealing luggage when the arriving passengers meet those waiting for them and are not as vigilant.
