Starting January the Department of Customs (DGA) will have a new system in operation that will enable DGA officials to monitor mine export freight containers in real time. Customs director Fernando Fernandez said the new system of controls would considerably reduce tax evasion by mining companies. Speaking at a breakfast meeting at the Listin Diario offices yesterday, Wednesday 18 December, Fernandez said that they have already detected four to five major cases of evasion and expect to charge RD$4.2 billion in past due taxes and penalties.
