President Danilo Medina says that the Dominican and Haitian governments will be meeting “soon” in order to formally open talks as agreed during the PetroCaribe summit in Venezuela earlier this week. The Dominican leader talked about the Venezuelan government, the United Nations and the European Union’s roles as observers. Medina took care to mention that the two high-level commissions would work with a common agenda, and that as well as matters related to the National Legalization Plan that is being implemented in the country, they would address other immigration issues, the environment and poverty.
“We will be working on this and we asked that there be observers at the meetings that take place between the two commissions,” said the President as he was interviewed after heading the graduation ceremony of 13 midshipmen at the Dominican Armada’s “27 de Febrero” Naval Base yesterday, Wednesday 18 December. The President said that he appreciated the Venezuelan government’s role in the process that will lead to the resumption of talks. When asked when the commission of officials from both nations would be appointed, the President limited himself to saying: “Soon.”
