Starting in 2014 the Ministry of Public Health, through the Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) will introduce the vaccination against the Human Papilloma virus (HPV), with an initial investment of over RD$200 million. According to the PAI director, Dr. Zacarias Garib, the political will exists and they are making great efforts to introduce the vaccine that prevents cervical cancer in young women.
He said that he hopes to have some 300,000 doses by the middle of 2014, since the HPV vaccine was a part of the budget for next year. He added that they are working to strengthen the programs for early detection of tumors related to the Human Papilloma virus. They are also training Ministry of Public Health vaccination center personnel in order to strengthen the cold storage network for preserving the vaccine.
