Relatives believe a mastermind was behind Nasco murder

The lawyer for the family of the late 37-year old TV host Claudio Nasco, Francisco Taveras believes there was an “intellectual author” behind his killing on Friday, 13 December. “This did not come from them; there is an intellectual author behind all this and we believe that the investigation by the District Attorney office should be aimed at finding the intellectual author.” Taveras said that the fact that the victim’s mobile phones were burned leads them to suspect that the killers had evidence that could lead to the person who masterminded the crime. He also said that this was a pre-meditated crime, made evident by the rope, tape and knife the killers were carrying.

District Attorney Dante Castillo has asked the Nasco family lawyers to come forth with leads or evidence that there is a mastermind behind the crime. The Police have accepted the statements from the three men under arrest who say that Nasco owed them money. Following the murder, the three used Nasco’s cards to take out money from ATMs in several banks.

Nasco was found dead at the Cabanas Chevere on 30 de Mayo highway in Santo Domingo last Friday. Three young men, Oscar Perez (Yandel), Luis Manuel Estevez Ponciano (Macuto or Anderson) and Joel Rafael Miliano Rodriguez (Pateo) were sentenced to a year of preventive custody at Azua jail after they confessed to their involvement.

One of them, a 19-year old defendant Oscar Perez (Yandel) who admitted to having stabbed Nasco, revealed that he had gone out between ten and eleven times with the journalist, allegedly after meeting him on a website used by gay men. “It’s true, we tied him up, I had the knife, it was mine.” The confession was made in the presence of the District Attorney for the National District, and confirmed by the judge for Permanent Attention, Jose Alejandro Vargas during the custody hearing. “I have known Nasco for around nine months, I was the first who went out with him, later we did it with two friends Luis Manuel Ponciano (Macuto or Anderson) and Joel Rodriguez (Pateo) with whom we would meet at twelve on Luperon Avenue.” He added that the four would get in Nasco’s vehicle there and go to the cabana where they had sex in return for payment.

“I am under arrest because Nasco and I had agreed that it was RD$12,000 for the three, Luis Manuel, Joel and I, he owed us money from before that he said he was going to give us and he did not, about RD$25,000.” Perez stated that the NCDN announcer passed by the Plaza Luperon to pick him up and they arrived at the Cabanas Chevere motel, located on the 30 de Mayo Highway, and once there they decided to collect their money “before doing the job.” According to Perez, they felt that they had been tricked when they received just RD$2,800 for the three of them, which they did not accept and they decided to walk out. “When we were leaving with the money, we tied him up so we could go, and then he said that he had the number on us and he knew where we lived and that we were going to have serious problems with him.” He said he stabbed him.
