Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo and PUCMM university rector Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado revealed the results of the consultations for the preparation of the Education Pact yesterday, Thursday 19 December. In a press conference at the PUCMM, Montalvo said that 8,623 individuals and organizations had contributed 50,516 proposals to improve Dominican education. Minister Montalvo says that it is important that all decisions, especially those that affect matters as important as this, be based of dialogue and understanding. Most of the proposals called for improvements in the training of teachers, he said. Other topics covered were duties of teachers, compensation, universalization of pre-university studies, curricular reform, fulfillment of school hours, and an expansion of higher education. 450 students gave their opinions, calling for more creative schools, with more artistic, sport and nature-oriented activities.
Monsignor Nunez Collado said that worktables would be assembled to represent all sectors. The resulting pact is scheduled for signing on 15 February 2014. “Be assured that truly beneficial results for educational reform in our country will come from this effort,” he said at the press conference.
Minister Montalvo described the forthcoming pact as a “historic opportunity for the country.”
